What is this?
NewsOfTheWeek was designed to deal with the issues surrounding young people and news today. There has been an influx of those who aren't versed or interested consuming their news from untrustworthy sources on social media or the media, of which they are sceptical. This led to a desire to get involved; to use social media to spread news in a positive way while still retaining the authenticity and professionalism of a news company. NewsOfTheWeek is that news company, so welcome!
How did it start?
NewsOfTheWeek came from a segment of my Politics college class which took away the sometimes mundane task of staying informed and turned it into a part of our course. That meant compiling prominent stories throughout the week and 'reporting' back on them the first lesson of the next week. To ensure everyone was involved we did this on a rota and while I would have liked to have thought I was up to date with the news, doing that task really helped me stay up to date in a way that wasn't watch the news at ten with my parents or trawling through articles online.
Needless to say, that task was useful and I see no reason why it wouldn't be useful to more people in keeping them engaged with what goes on around them, hence it becoming more than that little task in a little class.
What is it now?
The main feature currently is The Roundup podcast which examines and explains news stories found from the major news providers, and critiques their reporting where necessary. You can listen to the podcast on this website or on Spotify. Aside from this, we write articles that go into depth on specific issues, covering the facts and then the author's opinion.
In the future, I would like to include other avenues to access our reporting, on social media like Tik Tok and Youtube etc. There you could expect to see interviews, deep-dives into issues or events and debates.
Our Standards:
Too much of the news is presented with very little transparency, and this is particularly a problem with political news which covers a world that is famously insincere. News reporting should be fact based at the very least and so reporting in either The Roundup or NewsOfTheWeek articles will be held to that standard. So while you'll get opinions rest assured you'll get the facts first and foremost.
To adhere to that principle of trustworthiness and transparency, when making the news round-up we endeavour to not exclude any news provider and leaving the nuance in the stories where other providers might not.
Finally, it is very important to understand we do not claim the news we collect for the roundup. It is not our own we just compile it with the goal of making news more accessible to different people with the hope of exposing them to other points of view in our own balanced way.
